Flip Flop and Flap on Australia Day at the 2008 Havaianas Thong Challenge
In its third consecutive year, the 2008 Havaianas Thong Challenge will attempt to break the world record for the ‘longest line of inflatable air beds in water’, and in doing so help raise funds for Surf Lifesaving Clubs and the Starlight Children's Foundation.
On Australia Day (Saturday, January 26), Aussies are encouraged to head to their local beach to participate in the world record attempt. Last year 1465 people across Australia took to the water on their giant inflatable thongs in an attempt to break the world record.
The current record of 863 giant floating Havaianas thongs set at Sydney’s Coogee Beach in 2006 remains unbeaten, but this year, Havaianas is keen to shatter the record and encourages all Australians and their families to support the uniquely Australian event.
Former Olympic gold medallist and Havaianas Thong Challenge spokesperson, Brooke Hanson, encourages all Australian’s to get behind the challenge.
“Most wardrobes in Australia will hold at least one pair of rubber thongs. It’s a way of life in this country! The Havaianas Thong Challenge celebrates this tradition, whilst raising money for two amazing programs,” Ms Hanson said.
The Havaianas Thong Challenge will be held in five states across Australia at 10:30am (local time).
South Australia – Glenelg Beach
Victoria - St Kilda Beach
New South Wales - North Bondi Beach
Western Australia - Port Beach North Fremantle
Queensland – Noosa Beach
The $30 entry fee ($25 if you register online) into the 2008 Havaianas Thong Challenge includes a limited edition Australia Day Havaianas giant inflatable thong (valued at $49.95) as well as the donation of $5 to the Starlight Children's Foundation and $10 to the nippers programs of the participating Surf Life Saving clubs.
